This is a story about courage and resilience, but the protagonist this time is not the sick child, but his mother. In many stories of children with tumors, the child's strength and tenacity are often the focus, while the family members who silently support them, especially the mothers, are frequently overlooked. Today, we will tell the story of a mother who, when her child faces life-and-death challenges, manages to stay clear-headed and decisive under pressure, fighting for the best treatment plan for her child.

A Perfect Family, Suddenly Struck by a Blow  

The protagonists of this story are a young couple. The husband is an engineer, and the wife is an English teacher at a public school. They live in Weifang City and are considered a pair of young elites in this small city, enjoying successful careers and a harmonious relationship, epitomizing a happy life. Shortly after getting married, they quickly became expectant parents, and when they learned they were having twins, the entire family was overjoyed. During the pregnancy, they prepared double the supplies for the two soon-to-arrive little lives, and anticipation and happiness filled every corner of their home. On the day the children safely arrived, the delivery room was filled with laughter and tears. The arrival of the twins made the entire family feel like they had received a blessing from above, and their happiness reached its peak. However, no one knew that this calm would soon be shattered.

When the children were just four months old, the mother ended her maternity leave and prepared to return to work, and family life began to return to its normal rhythm. Just as everything seemed to be on track, one day, while bathing the older twin, the grandmother suddenly noticed something unusual. When her hand gently touched the small lump on the boy's leg, her heart sank. The grandmother immediately grew anxious and rushed to find the mother. Her voice trembled, "The child's leg is swollen; there's a lump that's different from his brother. Can you take a look at it?" The lump didn't look red or warm and didn't appear to be caused by a bruise, but this only cast a shadow over the mother's heart. She has some medical knowledge, and although she is unsure of the nature of the lump, she is filled with a strong sense of unease. After regaining her composure, she decided without hesitation to go to the hospital for an examination, even though night had already fallen, and the family didn’t waste a moment.

Time Stopped, What Is This Illness?  

That night, the couple immediately took their child to the local hospital. The doctor conducted an initial examination with an ultrasound and suspected that the lump on the boy's leg was a hemangioma, advising them to go to Jinan, the provincial capital, for further checks. Despite being filled with anxiety, the mother decisively made the choice to head to Jinan immediately. The whole family had no objections; almost instantly, they sprang into action. The grandparents helped care for the other child at home while the parents focused their attention on the older twin’s health.

Upon arriving in Jinan, the doctor’s initial attitude provided them with some relief. The doctor believed the boy's condition didn't seem too serious and that it could still be a hemangioma that could be resolved through interventional surgery. However, after the boy underwent the interventional procedure, the doctor’s demeanor changed as he held the pathology report. With gentle yet serious words, the attending physician told the parents that it was not the hemangioma they had initially imagined, but rather an infantile fibrosarcoma, a more malignant tumor. He then made a shocking suggestion: to prevent the tumor from spreading, the only option was amputation.

This news struck like a bolt from the blue, shattering the mother’s heart. She could hardly believe that within just a few days, the doctor’s diagnosis had changed so drastically. What she thought was just a minor procedure was suddenly turned into a recommendation for amputation. Although the doctor repeatedly emphasized that amputation was the only way out, the mother could not accept such a conclusion. She firmly believed there must be other options.

Not Waiting Any Longer, She Decided to Head to Shanghai  

After weighing her thoughts, the mother made a difficult decision—rather than undergoing the amputation in Jinan, she chose to take her child to Shanghai to seek a second opinion. This decision was not easy; she knew that delaying the diagnosis could mean the tumor would continue to spread, but she could not rely solely on the recommendations from that hospital. Despite the uncertainty ahead, the entire family supported her decision without hesitation. 

The journey from Jinan to Shanghai was fraught with challenges. At that time, strict pandemic control measures were in place, making long-distance travel difficult, especially with a sick child. But the family did not hesitate for a moment and immediately took action. The grandparents drove through the night, while the mother comforted her child in the car, her emotions complex and uneasy, yet she firmly believed this was the right choice. 

Looking back, this decision undoubtedly changed the trajectory of the entire family’s life. At that time, the grandparents had not yet retired, and accompanying their daughter and grandson on this journey required them to apply for early retirement. The father, busy with work, had to hand over his projects to others for management; everyone understood what that meant for a middle-aged person. The four-month-old twins were still breastfeeding, and many people had yet to recover from childbirth, but the mother had already taken the whole family to chase after her son’s chance at life. Yet it was this determination and bravery that provided her son with a new hope.

Upon arriving in Shanghai, the hospital quickly arranged for examinations and surgery. The doctors confirmed the diagnosis of infantile fibrosarcoma and operated on the child within a week. The surgery successfully removed the tumor, and the doctor informed the anxious family that the results were far better than expected. The sarcoma had been successfully excised, with very clear margins, showing only slight invasion of the bone and no obvious signs of metastasis. When the family heard this, it felt as though the heavy stone on their hearts had lightened somewhat. The doctor further explained that although the surgical outcome was excellent, infantile fibrosarcoma is a highly aggressive tumor, and even with successful removal, there remains a risk of recurrence. To lower this risk, several rounds of chemotherapy could be conducted afterward. The main goal of chemotherapy is to eliminate any potentially residual tumor cells and prevent the disease from returning. However, chemotherapy has certain side effects for young children, and how to weigh the options must be decided by the parents.

A Dilemma, An Uncertain Future: How Will Mom Decide?  

That day, the mother stood by the hospital window, gazing at her sleeping son, her heart swirling with immense hesitation and anxiety. She knew her previous decision—to resolutely bring her child to Shanghai to avoid him losing a foot—was made instinctively and decisively, saving her son in that moment. However, this time, faced with the doctor's suggestion of chemotherapy, she found herself in a deeper conflict. The doctor emphasized that chemotherapy could significantly reduce the risk of recurrence, but also candidly admitted that it would bring a series of side effects—nausea, hair loss, and even possible impacts on the child’s future growth and development.

She couldn’t help but ask herself whether it was worth it to have such a small body endure such suffering, all to deal with a one-in-a-million chance of recurrence? She could not ignore the impacts of chemotherapy on her son’s body, but she also could not accept even the slightest risk of recurrence. The weight of this decision pressed down on her like a heavy burden. As a mother, she longed to provide the best protection for her child, not allowing any risk to compromise his future. She had made the right choice before, but now, faced with weighing the pros and cons of chemotherapy, could her decision still be so resolute? 

She had to act! For her son’s future, to ensure there was no further threat to his life, she made her decision once again.

A Broken World, Pieced Together by Her Willpower  

Thus, for nearly a year afterward, the back-and-forth between Weifang and Shanghai became their new norm. The mother not only had to fight for her son's limited hospital bed but also had to constantly care for her growing younger son. With strict pandemic control measures in place, they faced long queues, complicated health checks, and strict travel restrictions repeatedly. But for her son's treatment, she never dared to stop her pace. Whenever hospital beds were tight, she had to join the ranks of other parents to fight for precious treatment opportunities for her child.

In her usual gentle demeanor, she now disregarded her image and stood in line with other parents in the hospital corridors, even going to great lengths several times to secure a bed. This was a stark contrast to her elegant image as a teacher, but everything she did was for her child's life.

At the same time, her younger son, still very small, needed her care even though he was not sick. She was forced to face dual pressures—accompanying her son through treatment while also caring for her younger child’s growth.

But her life didn’t end there; she was still an English teacher, and under these circumstances, she continued to work. The hospital corridor became her temporary office; while her son received treatment, the mother often found a quiet corner to record online classes, ensuring that her students wouldn’t fall behind due to her absence.

Her world was divided into several pieces, each requiring her full commitment. 

Fortunately, the mother was not alone; family support became her strongest backup. The grandparents rushed from their hometown to help their daughter and grandson, resolutely putting down their work to wait outside the hospital every day, bringing her food and daily necessities. Although they couldn’t enter the ward to accompany her, they were always there, providing support and strength.

Every time she saw her family, the mother’s tense emotions would ease slightly; she knew she was not fighting alone. Meanwhile, after discussions, her husband returned to work, while the four grandparents took responsibility for caring for the twin younger brother, sharing the burden of this difficult time as a family.

Not wanting to let this united family down, a miracle finally appeared. The older boy’s surgery and chemotherapy were highly successful, and the doctors even ended the chemotherapy course ahead of schedule. The child’s recovery exceeded everyone’s expectations, and he gradually returned to a normal life, reclaiming his childhood. 

Now, the twin brothers are nearly five years old and live a simple yet happy life. Today, while life remains full of challenges, this family has become closer and stronger due to their experiences. Maternal love is not only a soft protection but also a fearless responsibility. Together with her family, the mother faces the uncertainties of the future, still filled with strength.
