Facing Cancer Together: My Boy is Six Years Old!

In early 2019, my son, Little Seven, was diagnosed with high-risk stage four neuroblastoma at just three months old. The situation was dire...
By June 2020, after 13 months and visits to nine hospitals, Little Seven successfully completed his treatment! (For more details, see how parents fought for their son’s life across nine hospitals in five cities.)
Now, Little Seven has become a superhero in the eyes of his parents, and they want to share this gift of growth with everyone for encouragement!
Five Years, Six Years, Little Seven—A Letter to My Superhero
This year marks the fifth year we have faced our battle against cancer together. Time has come to visit you for the sixth time, dear Little Seven. Enjoy your joyful moments, and I especially thank you for bringing more joy into my life.
Little Seven's Sixth Birthday
Time flies.
My little boy is quickly accumulating vocabulary in both English and Chinese and is starting to explore interests like basketball, roller skating, electronic piano, and programming. He is broadly learning about science, history, paleontology, military affairs, and geopolitics, and has opened new chapters in life by hosting, reciting, diving, and sea fishing. Compared to the child I was at your age, you are truly a superhero who can think across ages, see far and wide, and explore the world with boundless imagination! You are striving to excel in every area you touch. In comparison, I feel I have fallen short, squandering talent and missing opportunities while facing many challenges. Luckily, my life has you as a beacon of light, lifting my spirits and guiding me to be more positive and engaged, believing that optimism will lead to new beginnings.

A Bit Sneaky
When did you start saying you grew up a year and became sneakier, like when you pulled a hidden version from a blind box? When did you pass by the supermarket just to “take a look” and ended up grabbing junk food that you didn’t want to let go of? When did you think you could do whatever you wanted because mom wasn’t around, refusing to practice the piano or clean your room, intentionally spitting mouthwash into the corner? When did you decide to practice somersaults during the flag-raising ceremony, convinced it was the right thing to do?
Actually, it doesn’t matter. If a mischievous child learns to behave, perhaps they would become a little less brave, like an insect trapped in paradise, flying far away without anyone caring for it. Therefore, we would rather see you bursting into laughter, frolicking by the pond, holding onto the reeds in rhythm with the wind. You could even become an alchemist, turning stories into soil; like a magician, conjuring candy from your songs.

I imagine.
What will you look like in 5, 10, or 20 years? Will you return home just like I did when I was young? What achievements will you have? Will you be the “happy nut,” the “little troublemaker,” or the “top student” in your class? If you, like I did when I was young, learn to climb walls to get online and tell lies, how should I deal with you? When will you start dating and share your joys with us, or will you keep secrets to yourself? What funny stories will you have with your friends? What beautiful moments worth cherishing will unfold in your life?
We often speculate about the future, but the end of it is simply “time passes and youth fades.” It’s better to seize the present; if there is something in your heart, don’t hesitate to stand out and attract praise. Even if you face waves on the road, they will only come for a moment and then pass.
Little Seven Playing Outdoors
Deeply Touched
It’s Little Seven, who bravely embraces new beginnings. It’s Little Seven, who can devour five bowls in one meal. It’s Little Seven, who encourages me to set up a stall instead of going to work. It’s Little Seven, who occasionally shows such warmth that it melts my heart. It’s Little Seven, who is as stubborn as I am, and the one who can read the atmosphere and pick the softest targets to tease. It’s Little Seven, who holds my hand to sleep, the one who doesn’t want to fall asleep waiting for the tooth fairy to take his teeth. It’s Little Seven, who, after saying he would miss me leaving, doesn’t even want to answer the phone. It’s Little Seven, who first thanks the Communist Party of China when traveling abroad.

Just grow up at your own pace. Don’t rush, take your time. Life has many impurities to face. You may start to avoid empty mountains, or perhaps fear gazing at the stars. Even if you are a butterfly that cannot fly across the ocean, who would blame you for being passive?
At this age, I send you my best wishes: May your life be as beautiful as jade and as splendid as brocade, and may you find joy after suffering!
